Birthday breakfast

My cousins, Tracy and Joanne kindly treated me to breakfast this morning at Bubba Gumps.  We are without a car now for a while so we wanted to learn about the bus system and walked out to Alii Drive where we picked up the Hele On bus, got off by the restaurant and enjoyed a fantastic view right at the waterside deck and the cruise ship in the photos was just pulling up its Tender and turned and left while we dined.  I enjoyed the strawberry and vanilla sauced pancakes while Joanne had this little fry pan of a seafood omelette.  Tracy stayed traditional and had the eggs, hash browns and sausages.  A lovely treat!

Once we finished breakfast we walked down the street to catch the trolley....does anyone from Ladysmith know if we sold our trolley to Hawaii?  Looks the same and has the same uncomfortable bench seats but we persevered and rode the whole route around because we wanted to see where the stops were if we needed to go somewhere....shopping for instance!  Aside from the trolley which takes about two hours to do its complete circle, there is another bus whose schedule we are trying to figure out called the Hele On bus.  

The surf here is still really high and usually the beaches are closed when this happens, but nothing holds back the surfers it seems!  I'm not sure if they are hanging ten or holding on with ten!  Fun to watch though.  I understand we will have what is called a black moon or some call it a blue moon and during this event the tides are higher and bigger surf is expected! Have you ever wondered which Island people are referring to when they say they are going to Hawaii?  Me too.  Turns out "The Big Island" is actually Hawaii, but because it is the largest in the archipelago, they (in the archipelago) are referred to as the Hawaiian Islands.  Currently my friend Val (who met me in Honolulu upon my return from Australia) and I are on the oldest island in the chain, Kauai.  It rains here more than the other islands, and is therefore known as the Garden Isle.  So green, lush and beautiful.   We are right beside the ocean in a condo for a couple weeks and the sound of the ever rolling surf, the tall waving palm tree outside our door, the sun and birds of many varieties, including the islands feral chickens and roosters.  The chickens  are a master class in introduced animals.  Thousands of feral chickens roam the island with no natural predators. Feet keep on walking more shopping to do

It is Thursday of our first week here in Kailua Kona on Big Island, Hawaii.  The plan for today was to drive out to the Queens Market at Waikaloa to find the 'Crocs' footwear store.  Personally, I'm not a big fan of the clunky looking ones that are popular today so in the clearance section I did find a pair of the 'Z' ones I like for $29.00 so I'm happy.  Even Barb found a pair of black sandals as well.   Once we left there, I drove us up to Hamakauas Macadamia Nut Company in Kawaihae.  I'd been a few times prior with other friends and family.  It has changed a bit inside but they still provided samples of all the different flavours of coatings on the nuts so you can purchase the canned flavours you like.  We liked a few!  Hey!  You can even get spam flavoured ones!! We watched a video of the process from tree to package.  The factory wasn't working inside today to watch so perhaps it's off season for macs?  At any rate we sat and ate ice ream cones,

Do we ‘have to’ leave?

Yesterday was a bit challenging. It was our last day on Big Island.  Our condo was to be vacated by 11:00, we overstayed a wee bit longer since no cleaning lady had arrived yet.  We had left it all neat and tidy, when it was time to leave we hopped in the car and made our way out to Waikaloa once again, for something to do.  Wandered around for a bit, looked at some lovely art pieces, and a bit of jewelry before getting back on the road once again to return to Costco for a hot dog before we left!   But first, we decided to follow a friends footsteps earlier in spring and find the Kona Saltery. Thank goodness for gps on the phone.  Found it easily.  A charming gal came out to greet us and tell us where to go to explore all the different salts they process!  She left us to look at them on our own for a couple of minutes promising to return.  Which she did bringing in a plate of small chopped up bits of tomatoe, cucumber and pineapple.  She explained to us who they were and how they harve
