Trip to Hanalei

Visit to Hanalei

The town of Hanalei is interesting.  You actually drive gradually up the side of a mountain and if one had some sort of warning...a sign or whatever, there is a pullout where you can look down on the town.  The pullout is right in the middle of a C turn and comes upon you so suddenly, then the photo op is gone just like that!  Prior to our arrival it looked like it had just finished pouring.  Taro grows in the flooded fields really well with all the rainfall on that side.We drove slowly through the towns main street, turned around at the school and found a parking space for the car and walked along looking in shops.  Strangely, we didn't see too many hippies nor did we smell the pot smokers.  Maybe they all grew up and are now the oldies sitting on the benches along the buildings. Something we have observed....most women's clothing stores, boutiques and home decor stores have man chairs outside.  It is good to see they think about the male partners of shoppers in this way.  S

Exploring the Island, one dirt road after another....

It was a dark and stormy night!  mind you, Val told me about it this morning, I totally slept through it!  I guess there are some benefits to being deaf!!!  It is so different this morning from yesterday as you will see by the first two photos.   But, it's not cold and it smells so fresh and sweet! Yesterday we hopped in the car to seek out the location of 'Smiths Luau' as it is close by where we live and we would like to attend a Luau on this island. But driving too far at night is not high on our to do list! I'm sure the folks who live here know exactly where they are and need to go, but us 'newby's' aren't so fortunate.  Road signs are difficult to see in some areas.  However, we detoured to a strip mall for a bank machine and after using it, we discovered a small boutique, which, it turned out was closed.  Two police cars were sitting out front but I think the two officers were just getting a coffee or something from the cafe next door and not

Kauai Hawaii

Have you ever wondered which Island people are referring to when they say they are going to Hawaii?  Me too.  Turns out "The Big Island" is actually Hawaii, but because it is the largest in the archipelago, they (in the archipelago) are referred to as the Hawaiian Islands.  Currently my friend Val (who met me in Honolulu upon my return from Australia) and I are on the oldest island in the chain, Kauai.  It rains here more than the other islands, and is therefore known as the Garden Isle.  So green, lush and beautiful.   We are right beside the ocean in a condo for a couple weeks and the sound of the ever rolling surf, the tall waving palm tree outside our door, the sun and birds of many varieties, including the islands feral chickens and roosters.  The chickens  are a master class in introduced animals.  Thousands of feral chickens roam the island with no natural predators. Go to this website for info on how these chickens came to be here.... http://themodernfarme

Road trip in South Austrailia

We left Adelaide Hills around 10 this morning and drove down to the coast at Meningie. This place is memorable to me as several years ago when we came over with a motorcycle, we arrived into the port of Darwin with the bike, rode from there down through the Centre of the continent (the outback) to South Australia. For the most part it was very hot so we needed accommodation with air conditioning. We had brought a tent, sleeping bags and other assorted paraphernalia with us from home and had it tied to the back of the bike. I recall it was a total inconvenience packing all this stuff so that when we arrived late one cooler afternoon into the town of Meningie we decided to put up the tent in this cute park we found. We were the only tenters! Should have told us something....anyway, we turned in early, we had a blow up air mattress as well. After about an hour, we noticed it getting cool, then cold and in the night the air went out if the mattress and we were laying on cold frigid
