Kauai Hawaii

Have you ever wondered which Island people are referring to when they say they are going to Hawaii?  Me too.  Turns out "The Big Island" is actually Hawaii, but because it is the largest in the archipelago, they (in the archipelago) are referred to as the Hawaiian Islands.  Currently my friend Val (who met me in Honolulu upon my return from Australia) and I are on the oldest island in the chain, Kauai.  It rains here more than the other islands, and is therefore known as the Garden Isle.  So green, lush and beautiful.

We are right beside the ocean in a condo for a couple weeks and the sound of the ever rolling surf, the tall waving palm tree outside our door, the sun and birds of many varieties, including the islands feral chickens and roosters.  The chickens are a master class in introduced animals.  Thousands of feral chickens roam the island with no natural predators.

Go to this website for info on how these chickens came to be here....http://themodernfarmer.com:
I read that, if you caught one of these chickens, plucked and prepared it for cooking,
you put it in a big pot, add water and hold it down with a rock.  When the Rock is soft
the chicken can be eaten!!!!  They are rangy tough little birds!!

Whomsoever said you can't teach an old dog new tricks never met us....not that we are old dogs, but you get the gist....we have a Nissan Altima, keyless start and stop etc.  Step on the brake, push the button and voila!  Mind you, the remote must be in the car with us!  I'm here to tell you that we have the cleanest windscreen on the island.   Boy, do those windshield wipers work well here!  Don't you hate it when you are used to a particular shift system in your own vehicle and suddenly you have to learn a totally new one?  We are taking turns driving.  Yesterday was my turn, first thing we did was go back to the car rental place to complain that the %#%^**%# trunk wouldn't lock!!!!  A quick lesson from the returned car lady and we were off to shop!  Turns out you need to be about 10 to 15 feet away to lock everything on the car!

We found a fabulous "Farmers" Market, only baked goods, vegetables, fruits, honey etc.  We also had a small container of pineapple ice cream.  Nothing but frozen pineapple....reminded me of the frozen banana ice cream!  Learn something new everyday!  Leaving there with our tote bags full, we hastened to go find Costco as I wanted to see about getting some silica for my hearing aids.  They keep conking out and I'm suspecting it's the humidity both here and in Aussie land.  Turns out the hearing centre was closed.  So we had to do with buying another bottle of wine!!!  Walmart was next on the list to find some cheap sunglasses, I broke my other cheap pair shoving them in my purse.  I like cheap ones because of this and the fact I have to wear them over my prescription glasses.  Next we heard Macy's was having a sale....heard that right.  We try to help the economy!!  Somehow, We lost the €^%#***#} car in the parking lot!  I suspect they moved the exit doors around just to confuse us!

The sun is out, the breeze is gentle and we are off in the car to do something.  Haha on Val, it's her turn to drive today!!!  Wonder what the day has in store and what new things we will discover today?

Sounds like you are both having a blast. I am glad you are located where you are on the southern part of the Island, because it can be quite wet and rainy further up, like you said hence the name the Garden Isle. Aptly named. Having the car is great and you can venture out when and where ever. Try to go to Wailua Falls and Waimea Canyon both worth the drive as far as I'm concerned but then everyone's likes are different. Above all else keep the vino handy (but not when driving) keep the sand out of certain areas and slather on the sun screen. TTYS

Did you take your swear jaw with you? because it looks like you could have put a few dollars in it pertaining to the car!! Is it a convertible as you suggested to Jim?

You must be having a really great time. I had to google feral chickens. No wonder they are so tough. Your post has convinced me to add Hawaii on my bucket list. It sounds like a very interesting place and even has a COSTCO. We recently got one in my little city here. We have freezing rain this morning. The roads are slick and terrible but fortunately I'm not heading anywhere today. Have a pleasant day.
