Do we ‘have to’ leave?

Yesterday was a bit challenging. It was our last day on Big Island.  Our condo was to be vacated by 11:00, we overstayed a wee bit longer since no cleaning lady had arrived yet.  We had left it all neat and tidy, when it was time to leave we hopped in the car and made our way out to Waikaloa once again, for something to do.  Wandered around for a bit, looked at some lovely art pieces, and a bit of jewelry before getting back on the road once again to return to Costco for a hot dog before we left!

But first, we decided to follow a friends footsteps earlier in spring and find the Kona Saltery. Thank goodness for gps on the phone.  Found it easily.  A charming gal came out to greet us and tell us where to go to explore all the different salts they process!  She left us to look at them on our own for a couple of minutes promising to return.  Which she did bringing in a plate of small chopped up bits of tomatoe, cucumber and pineapple.  She explained to us who they were and how they harvest the salt, then adding flavours and spices to produce different salty concoctions.  The Salt Farm is located on Kona's historic Keãhole Point.  They draw the water from a depth of 2,000 feet ensuring ultra pristine ocean water is harvested.  It is then put into settling ponds to evaporate the water leaving behind the salty crystals.

Then she opened (one at a time) the little bottles of different colours and flavours of salt sprinkling a bit of each in a paper plate whilst we used toothpicks to spear a small chunk of aforementioned fruit or veg, and dipped it in the salt.  I purchased a mini box with three flavours, garlic infused, rosemary flavour and a Smokey black.  Barb got two mini boxes of six different flavours.  One thing that surprised both Barb and I, the small bits of pineapple dipped in the salts is very tasty.  To me the cucumber was a bit overpowering.

Once we had finished our gourmet Costco hotdog, we really had nowhere else to be.  Another place on our 'todo' list was the Vanillerie.  However, it was closed. 😢.  So off to return the rental car, catch the rental car van over to the airport and wait for our flight.  It made for a long evening, however everything proceeded as planned.

We will soon board our flight to the island, BC's Big Island, and back to our respective homes.   It's been such fun.  We put over a thousand miles on the rental car, traversed the whole island around and across, never did see either Mauna Kea or Mauna Loa without cloud shrouding their tops, and I never did win one of the Rummy games against the card shark!!!   Aloha Barb, thanks for buddying with me in Hawaii, for ending up having to do all the driving at the end, washing the dishes, doing up my seat belt for me, and helping me get my back pack on, lifting the luggage, and likely a few other things I've missed!!  My right hand and arm will heal and I won't have that kind of help at home!!!
